Με μια ματιά

One-time home of avant-garde American poet Charles Henri Ford, this cosy historic hotel in a 17th-century Venetian mansion is a haven of peace. A short stroll from Chania’s maze of shopping streets and tavernas along the harbourfront, there are nine suites, the best of which have spacious roof terraces.

Take a building dating from the 1400s, give it an architecturally striking renovation and voilà: you’ve got the truly remarkable Azade.

Azade Chania is a charming boutique hotel close to the Venetian harbour in Chania was once the residence of the American poet Charles Henri Ford. Previous notable proprietors of this 17th-century dwelling include an Ottoman pasha. The nine suites have high ceilings and Ottoman-era influences, such as the attic or oda in some; and there’s a fountain in the courtyard leftover, too.

Nestled in the heart of the Old Town and historic Venetian walls of the port city of Chania, Crete, Azade Boutique Hotel– derived from a Persian woman’s name symbolizing Freedom, Nobleness and Kindness of Heart dates back to 1640 AD and has been carefully restored to respect its history and the traditional Venetian architecture. With only nine suites, each have their unique style, some with terrace lending magnificent views.

With only nine rooms or suites over three floors–the ground floor with a gorgeous dining area–actually Charles Henri Ford’s original bedroom–where you’ll eat a delicious two-course homemade breakfast using local Cretan ingredients, I found it an intimate and peaceful setting to base myself when exploring the bustling streets of Chania.
